Getting ready for your trip to Fukuoka: How to get from Fukuoka Airport to major areas based on your travel style

Fukuoka Prefecture is a place where many people from all over Japan gather in search of delicious food and power spots. Fukuoka Airport, the prefecture's transportation hub, is so convenient that it is said to be the airport closest to the city center in the world. It is the second busiest airport in Japan in 2021 (Tokyo Regional Aviation Bureau/Osaka Regional Aviation Bureau "Summary of Utilization Overview of Airports Under Jurisdiction"), and JAL has routes to 14 airports across the country. (As of July 21, 2022)

Another important point to consider when planning your trip is how to get from Fukuoka Airport to major tourist areas such as Hakata, Tenjin, Dazaifu, and Kokura.

So, we will introduce four transportation methods - train, bus, car, and taxi - to suit your travel style, whether you want to feel the local atmosphere, enjoy a drive, or just want to get to your destination quickly. You can also compare travel times and fares, so be sure to use this as a reference when traveling to Fukuoka.

Fukuoka Airport has many transportation options and provides easy access to the city!

The domestic passenger terminal building is directly connected to the city subway, and the Fukuoka Airport Line's "Fukuoka Airport Station" is located on the second basement floor. There is no subway directly connected to the international passenger terminal building, but a free shuttle bus operates to the domestic passenger terminal building, so it is convenient for those traveling by train. The nearest station is located inside the airport, so those planning to travel without a car can easily get there.

In addition to the subway, there are also many buses. For both domestic and international flights, there are city buses heading to the airport area, as well as express buses to the suburbs of Fukuoka Prefecture and other prefectures. If you take the city buses that are also used by locals, you can experience the local atmosphere.

If you are driving, it takes about 10 minutes to get to central Hakata. If you would like to enjoy driving around the area, we recommend renting a car.

Of course, there are taxis on hand, so if you have a lot of luggage, take one. It's also a good idea to ask the driver for some local information.

Hakata Station is the gateway to Kyushu, with many forms of transport and a bustling network of businessmen, tourists and locals. There are also many hotels in the area, making it the perfect starting point for any trip.

Fukuoka Airport is located in Hakata Ward, so it takes just a few minutes by any means to get there. Even if you include the time to wait for trains and buses and the time to rent a car, it rarely takes more than an hour.

Access by train

It takes about 5 minutes by subway from Fukuoka Airport to Hakata Station.
Fukuoka Airport Subway Station is located on the basement floor of the domestic passenger terminal building, and is only two stops away from Hakata Station. The fare is 260 yen one way. There are about eight trains per hour, with the first train leaving at 5:45 and the last train leaving at 0:00. (As of July 19, 2022)

If you arrive at Fukuoka Airport on an international flight, you can take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal. It takes about 15 minutes by free shuttle bus from the international passenger terminal building to the domestic passenger terminal building.
