Designed by Shigeru Ban, an architect who has worked on many art museums both in Japan and abroad, the hotel is a space where you can feel the presence of the rice fields no matter where you are, and you can enjoy the approximately 2,000 books selected together with book director Masataka Haba.

The common building library, which is open to everyone, has books on 10 themes, such as "Nature and Creatures," "Looking Around the World," and "Japan and Yamagata," which can be read anywhere in the building. There is also a guest building library that is only available to guests staying at the hotel, which has books on seven themes, such as "A Night Lost in Thought" and "Thinking About Things You Don't Know," that will help adults return to their true selves.

Hakone Honbako is a hotel created by Jiyujin Co., Ltd., known for the magazine Jiyujin, with the concept of "staying surrounded by books as if you were living there." You can enjoy about 12,000 books selected by the book direction brand YOURS BOOK STORE (now Hiraku), which also manages the Roppongi bookstore Bunkitsu, on the themes of "food, clothing, shelter, play, rest, and knowledge."

Each room is equipped with a "person's bookcase" filled with carefully selected books by people active at the forefront of various genres. You will have to wait until you visit to find out which bookcase is located where.

The hotel has a 24-hour bookstore with about 3,000 books, mainly about travel and mystery, as well as book-related goods, and guests can borrow a book of their choice and bring it to their room.

The rooms are equipped with dimmable indirect lighting, reading lamps, and sofas with armrests and ottomans, and are designed with the comfort of reading in mind. Although it is located in the center of the city, the location next to a lush park allows you to spend a quiet moment.

Miki-ya is a 300-year-old Japanese inn where Shiga Naoya, a literary master known as the god of novels, frequented and wrote his masterpiece, "At Kinosaki." The building from when "At Kinosaki" was written was destroyed in the Great Kitatan Earthquake in 1925, but after reconstruction in 1927, the room that Shiga Naoya frequently visited and loved still exists today, and although you cannot stay overnight, you can view it. From the verandas of some of the rooms, you can also view the garden depicted in "An'ya Koro."

Additionally, the bookshelf in the lounge space is lined with about 250 books selected by book director Masataka Haba, who is also involved with Kinosaki Onsen's publishing NPO "Books and Hot Springs," under the theme of "a bookshelf that makes you want to read." He created the bookshelf with the idea in mind of "allowing guests to forget about time and relax during their stay, just like guests in the good old days."

Sit in the lounge space with comfortable sofas and subdued lighting and pick up masterpieces written by past guests, travel books by authors, and photo collections of spaces filled with books. Immerse yourself in the world of literature and think about the scenery that Shiga Naoya saw.

Kyushu area

Furuyu Onsen is a hot spring resort in the mountains, also known as the "Beauty Hot Spring" and the "Secret Hot Spring." Tucked away in an alleyway is Akatsuki, a library where you can stay overnight, limited to one group per day.

The theme of the exhibition is "The Top 20 Books You'll Want to Keep on Your Home Bookshelf Forever," and it features approximately 1,400 books selected by Kyushu book lovers, 20 of each. There is no genre division, and a variety of books, including novels, picture books, photo books, manga, poetry books, and magazines, are displayed on one shelf per person, with each book accompanied by a reason why it is so important. Even if multiple people have selected the same book, you may discover something new by comparing the reasons for their selections.
