Nagasaki Prefecture highlights
Oura Cathedral
The National Treasure Oura Cathedral was built in 1864, at the same time as Japan opened its doors to the world at the end of the Edo period, and is the oldest surviving Gothic-style church in Japan.
This church is dedicated to the 26 Japanese Martyrs who were martyred by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and the facade of the cathedral faces Nishizaka, the site of their martyrdom. It is also one of the constituent assets of the World Heritage Site "Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region," as it is the site of a dramatic "discovery of believers" in the history of world religions, where hidden Christians confessed their faith to a priest in March 1865.
Address: 5-3 Minamiyamate-cho, Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture
Access: 20 minutes by tram from JR Nagasaki Station (take the tram bound for Sofukuji, change at Shinchi Chinatown tram stop and take the tram bound for Ishibashi, get off at Oura Cathedral tram stop), then walk for 5 minutes
