Just a short walk away

10:30 Walk around Kitsuki Castle Town - Suya no Saka

The slope came to be called Suya no Saka because there was a vinegar shop at the bottom of the slope. It was built in contrast to Shihoya no Saka in Minamidai, and is a typical slope of Kitsuki that clearly shows the sandwich-shaped castle town shape of samurai residences lined up on the high ground on the north and south sides, with town houses lined up in between. These two slopes are still used by citizens as main passageways today, just as they were in the Edo period.
It was a beautiful stone-paved slope with a harmonious blend of earthen and stone walls, and at the top was a square where horse riders and samurai would gather together.
The structure of the hill is wide at the top and narrow at the bottom, designed to make it easier to attack from above and harder to attack from below. (Time required: about 1 hour)

15:00 Municipal Takegawara Onsen

When it was first built in 1879, the bathhouse had a bamboo roof, but it was later remodeled to have a tiled roof, hence the name "Takegawara Onsen."
In 1938, the current building with its gorgeous Karahafu-style roof on the front was constructed, and its appearance has made it a symbol of Beppu Onsen.
There is a regular bath and the famous sand bath. In the sand bath, you put on a yukata and lie down on the sand, and a "sand-thrower" will pour sand warmed by the hot spring onto you. It's a comfortable experience that's worth experiencing at least once. (The duration is about 1 hour.)
