What kind of place is Jindaiji?

After traveling from Haneda Airport to Shinjuku Station, it's about a 20-minute ride on the Keio Line express train. From the north exit of Chofu Station, take a bus for about 15-20 minutes, and get off at either the Jindaiji Elementary School entrance or the Jindaiji entrance to arrive at Jindaiji Temple. Buses also depart from Chofu Station, Kichijoji Station, and Mitaka Station.

"Jindaiji" is one of the oldest temples in Tokyo, second only to Sensoji in Asakusa. It has the oldest Buddha statue in eastern Japan, "Shaka Nyorai" and was designated a national treasure on September 15, 2017. The entire area surrounding this historic temple is called "Jindaiji."

There are also several springs in the area, and the abundance of spring water was ideal for cultivating buckwheat. Waterwheels were used to mill the noodles, and as a result, buckwheat became a specialty of the area around Jindaiji.

The lush greenery of Jindaiji Temple makes it perfect for a stroll all year round, but it also hosts events throughout the year, such as the Jindaiji Daruma Market, one of Japan's three major Daruma festivals, held every year from March 3rd to 4th, the Jindaiji Hozuki Festival in mid-July, and the Sobamori Kannon Memorial Festival in mid-October.

First, take a deep breath at Jindaiji!

The lush Jindaiji Temple is not only home to the Shaka Nyorai statue, which was designated a national treasure in September 2017, but is also a power spot visited by many people for its benefits in matchmaking and warding off evil, including the Ganzan Daishi Hall, which enshrines Ganzan Daishi, a priest who performed numerous miracles with his extraordinary spiritual power.

Among them, pay attention to the omikuji! Jindaiji Temple is famous for having a lot of "Kyo (bad luck)". However, just because you draw a "Kyo" omikuji does not mean it is bad; it has the power to turn around into a "good" one. Why not try drawing an omikuji after paying your respects in the main hall?

At the time of the interview, I was able to draw a Daikichi (great fortune)!

There are three types of goshuin stamps at Jindaiji Temple. They are divided according to the hall and Buddha statue you visit: the "Muryoju" goshuin stamp of Amida Buddha, the principal image of the Main Hall; the "Kokuho Hakuhobutsu" goshuin of Shaka Nyorai, the principal image of the Shaka Hall; and the "Ganzan Daishi" goshuin, the principal image of the Daishi Hall.

Both the calligraphy and paper stamps cost 500 yen. The stamp books cost 2,000 yen and there are three types available.

We recommend going in the morning. Depending on the day, you can get your stamp in about 10 minutes without having to wait in line. The stamp office can get crowded on weekends and holidays, so make sure you go with plenty of time!

Jindaiji Temple is soothing with its gradations of green and the soft sounds of water. Also noteworthy are the flowers that bloom on the seasonal trees. Enjoy the scenery of each season, from the Nanjamonja tree during Golden Week to the osmanthus, soapberry, and autumn leaves in early autumn.

This is a great place to come and take a deep breath away from the hustle and bustle.

Kitaro Chaya has long been a popular spot when strolling around Jindaiji Temple. It was known for its atmospheric building, a renovated old house, but due to deterioration it closed in August 2024 and the building is currently being demolished. In November 2024, it will be relocated to Tenjin-dori Shopping Street in front of Chofu Station.

Even after the relocation, the store continues to sell original goods and snacks. The most popular item is the soft serve ice cream. Made with milk from a farm at the foot of Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture, where Shigeru Mizuki was born, the soft serve ice cream has a rich yet refreshing taste. The Medama Oyaji cookie and Ittan Momen spoon are also adorable, so don't forget to take a photo before they melt.
