"The timing of flight reservations varies between leisure and business, but traditionally, domestic business travel is one month in advance, and leisure travel is one to three months in advance. For overseas travel, both business and leisure travel have been six months in advance. For example, when returning from a trip, while the excitement of the trip is still lingering, many people seem to be considering where to go on their next holiday."

These are the words of Akiko Miyahara, who plans domestic and international trips at JALPAK. A travel specialist with experience accompanying overseas tours to over 120 countries, she says that with travel trends changing in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are now planning trips ahead of schedule.
Due to the increase in inbound tourists and other reasons, it is becoming more difficult to make last-minute reservations for travel.
"Domestically, business trips are declining due to factors such as the spread of remote meetings, but tourism is on the rise. We are also seeing more reservations being made earlier than before. It seems that reservations used to be made one to three months in advance, but now they are being made two to four months in advance. As travel costs are rising both domestically and internationally, and with fewer opportunities to travel, customers appear to be making their plans early."
In addition, it is said that there are many cases where domestic travel reservations for high-end price range trips are filling up more quickly than before.

"Inbound tourists are returning, and 2024 is likely to see a record number of tourists visiting Japan. Because of this situation, it is becoming harder to get hotel reservations, especially in urban areas. Last-minute reservations are more expensive for flights and hotels, and if you take your time, you might miss out on a reservation."
The fastest in the world. Starting a "one year later trip" 360 days in advance has many benefits
As domestic and international travel trends change, JAL now offers a reservation service that allows you to make reservations up to 360 days before your flight, making it one of the fastest reservations available in the world.

"Until now, we have received early reservations from repeat customers, primarily elderly people who are used to traveling, people who have holidays on the calendar, and honeymooners who plan their trips in advance. However, now that more people are making reservations early both domestically and internationally, it seems that there are great benefits to making reservations even earlier."
First of all, you can choose the flights and hotels you want. In addition, there are various other benefits.

"In many cases, early bird discounts, which are the best rates, are available for both flights and hotels, so you can save money by booking early for the same trip. Also, once you've decided on your destination, it becomes easier to reserve difficult-to-book restaurants, such as Michelin-star restaurants that are only available in that location. It also adds structure to your daily life. It can also motivate you by making you think, 'What do I have to accomplish by this point?' or 'I'll do my best.'"
From his abundant experience as a tour conductor, Miyahara says, "If you suddenly decide to go on a trip, it often ends up being a tight schedule and a waste." On the other hand, if you plan a trip about a year from now, that is, a "one year later trip," you can first decide on the dates and hotels and carefully consider the contents.

Now, from the perspective of a travel professional, let's take a look at recommended places to travel to in a year's time. First, let's take a look at Miyahara's recommended plans for domestic destinations.
"When it comes to Japan, why not think about where to go based around events? Many annual festivals and large-scale events have their dates decided more than a year in advance. Examples include the Awa Odori dance in Tokushima Prefecture and the Nebuta Festival in Aomori. Furthermore, the Setouchi Triennale, which is held every three years, will run for 107 days starting next April in 2025. The main venues are Shodoshima and Naoshima, and the Osaka Expo will be held at the same time. Why not combine these two and take a hopping tour that takes you from Shikoku to the Expo and then to Universal Studios Japan? As the dates of the events approach, there will be more promotions, so more people will see the information and reservations will fill up quickly, so now is a great time to go."

On the other hand, planning trips to natural attractions such as cherry blossoms and autumn leaves can be difficult a year in the future. The best viewing times can change depending on the weather just before the trip, and the earlier you prepare, the more disappointment you may feel if your trip is not planned.
"If you want to make nature your travel goal, it might be best to make sure you cover all the other attractions and then add in the seasonal elements later."
Traveling abroad one year from now will make it easier to visit popular destinations such as Hawaii.
A domestic trip one year from now would likely be fulfilling with careful research, but for overseas trips, we recommend popular tourist destinations that are well-known classics.

"Take the popular Hawaii, for example. These days, it's not uncommon for breakfast alone to cost over 5,000 yen, but early bookings often come with perks like a room upgrade and access to the club lounge, where you can enjoy free food and drinks. These are things you can only get in resort areas with an abundance of accommodation."
However, that doesn't mean you should avoid places other than resorts.

"If you book early, it tends to be easier to travel abroad overall. Fares are cheaper, and you can take a year to slowly save up money to spend abroad. It's a good idea to base your trip on places you want to visit. How about places like Europe, where flights take a long time and require a certain amount of time?"
The best part of traveling one year later is being able to enjoy the excitement for up to 360 days.
JALPAK also offers dynamic packages that allow you to freely combine flights that can be booked 360 days in advance with accommodation at the destination. We are currently considering whether we can offer special discounts to customers who make such early reservations. As demand for domestic and international travel increases, a one-year trip is likely to become an attractive option, as it allows you to fully enjoy the benefits of being the first to do so, something that you can never get by rushing.
"It's said that traveling is a three-time pleasure. There's the planning before you go, the time you're on the trip, and the time you return home and look back on your memories of the trip with your notes and souvenirs. In other words, there are three pleasures: before the trip, during the trip, and after the trip. The advantage of a one-year trip is that you can fully enjoy the before-trip period."

If you like, please try imagining your trip around this time next year. When you start to feel excited and think, "I want to go here," "I want to see this," or "I want to eat this," you're in the first phase of preparing for your trip. Why not take it easy and enjoy your trip a year from now?
