A morning staple! Recommended cafes with delicious toast
The world of toast is a simple combination of bread and toppings, allowing each shop to express its own unique style. We will introduce you to toast mornings that will allow you to experience a typical Nagoya morning, focusing on long-time favorites at coffee shops.
"Tsubame Pan" - Enjoy the rich toast at this bread specialty store where customers line up

Tsubame Pan Meieki Branch, located right next to Exit 4 of Miyako Underground Mall, which is directly connected to Nagoya Station, is a popular bakery cafe that has people lining up in the morning. This bread specialty store uses wheat from Biei, Hokkaido, and has seven stores in Nagoya City. They are proud of their bread, which is crisp on the outside and chewy and moist on the inside.

Ogura toast and butter toast come with boiled egg
The morning meals made with this bread come in three varieties: butter toast (drink +150 yen), Ogura toast (drink +250 yen), and carbonara toast (drink +550 yen).

Carbonara toast is a rich dish of crispy bacon topped with plenty of Parmesan cheese. When you eat it with a soft-boiled egg crumbled, the blissful taste spreads in your mouth.

The "Omelette Sandwich" is also available outside of breakfast hours, and is so popular that people line up just for it. The fluffy, runny egg and rich cheese sandwiched between the bread go perfectly together.

Perfectly paired with our home-roasted coffee, this is the "original" taste! "Kissa Matsuba"
Endoji Shopping Street is located halfway between Nagoya Station and Nagoya Castle. The area is filled with quaint streets and new stores are opening one after another, giving birth to a new culture. Coffee Shop Matsuba, which is located in this shopping street, was founded in 1933 and is said to be the oldest coffee shop still standing in Nagoya.

But that's not all that's surprising. In fact, this shop is also known as a historic establishment that branched off from "Mitsuba," the shop said to be the birthplace of Ogura Toast.

The building was renovated in 2018, but the "Original Ogura Toast" (450 yen, available all day) is still made by the third-generation owner. It's made very simply, with red bean paste sandwiched between buttered toast. It's a dish that highlights the fragrant, crispy bread and the mellow sweetness of the thick bean paste.
Also, during morning hours, you can enjoy a great combination of toast and red bean paste topping for just the price of a drink.

They are also proud of their home-roasted coffee, which is hand-dripped by the owner one cup at a time. Of the eight types of beans available, the "Classic Bitter Blend" (500 yen), which has a deep roasted richness and bitterness that goes well with sweet Ogura toast, is recommended. The new product "Ogura Toast Tart" (4 pieces for 950 yen), which was created under the supervision of the shop, is also a perfect souvenir from Nagoya.

The plump "Ebi Frya~" is the perfect match for bread! Long-established coffee shop "Compal"
Founded in 1947, Konparu is a popular chain that continues the good old Nagoya coffee shop culture. It has a flagship store in Osu Shopping Arcade, Naka Ward, one of Nagoya's most popular shopping districts, and operates eight stores in the city.

They also offer a reasonably priced morning set that includes toast for the price of a drink plus a little extra (130-270 yen), but the first thing you should try is their signature dish, the Fried Shrimp Sandwich (1,100 yen, available all day).

Nagoya people love "Ebi Furya~" - fried shrimp as the main ingredient, sandwiched with egg, cabbage, and a double sauce of cutlet and tartar. When you bite into it, the deliciousness of the perfect match of crispy toast, plump shrimp, soft egg and crunchy cabbage spreads in your mouth.

To accompany your sandwich, try the rich blended coffee (480 yen) extracted through a cloth filter. Since the establishment, it has been enjoyed mixed with sugar and fresh cream. You should also try the iced coffee (480 yen) which you make yourself by pouring hot coffee into a glass with ice.

The retro interior is always bustling with a mix of regulars and tourists. Why not combine a visit with a stroll around Osu?

"BUCYO COFFEE" is worth waiting in line to try, made with care and using the best ingredients.
Located about a 12-minute walk south from Nagoya Station, BUCYO COFFEE is greeted by an iconic grandpa doll. In addition to long-time regulars, the shop also has many fans from far away on weekends, and sometimes there is a line of 70 to 80 people waiting to get in.

The menu we came for was a special breakfast, with toast topped with homemade red bean paste and kinako butter. The red bean paste is based on the recipe of the owner's mother, and is cooked with as little sugar as possible, allowing the natural flavor of the red beans to come through. The kinako used in the kinako butter is made from soybeans that have been roasted over an open flame and then carefully ground twice to prevent the aroma from escaping. The crunch of roasted soybeans also adds a nice crunchy texture.
Both items can be purchased in the store, so many people buy them as souvenirs because they want to eat them at home!

The photo shows the "Complete Morning" (1,200 yen, includes a mini kinako soft serve and a drink) luxuriously topped with red bean paste and kinako butter. The dark roasted blend of coffee beans, which goes well with toast, is an addictive cup of coffee with a rich bitterness.

Even after breakfast hours, the same menu will be available as the Afternoon Morning Set (double topping 1,350 yen). Don't give up just because there's a line, it might be a good idea to visit at a different time.

Komeda Coffee Main Branch: Nagoya's proud coffee chain where customization is fun
When talking about breakfast, it would be impossible to leave out the nationwide chain "Komeda Coffee." Founded in Nagoya in 1968, this coffee shop chain has expanded to nearly 1,000 stores nationwide. The traditional Komeda Blend, which is served fresh with sugar, and the "Shiro Noire," a warm Danish pastry topped with soft serve ice cream, are also well-known.

Morning meals are available from opening time until 11:00. When you order a drink, you get free bread and toppings, which is the classic deal. You can choose from two types of bread: toasted Yamashoku bread, or a rich loaf of bread with Danish pastry (limited quantity per day). You can also choose from toppings such as Komeda's special Ogura An, or seasonal jams depending on the time of year.
Depending on the store, you can also add side dishes such as salads and yogurt. The ability to customize your meal to your liking is another reason why it is so popular.

Morning meals can be ordered at all stores, but if you are visiting Nagoya, why not try the main store? The main store, which has been loved for many years in Mizuho Ward, will be rebuilt and reopened in the fall of 2022.

Enjoying a cup of coffee in a space where newness and nostalgia coexist, you'll feel like a local Nagoya.

It is a place of interaction for everyone, from locals and tourists, to children and the elderly, and serves morning meals, a representative food culture of Nagoya, all day long so that all of these people can come and relax whenever they like.

This quaint shop was renovated from an old house that is over 80 years old, and the furniture used in the shop is by Karimoku, which is headquartered in Aichi Prefecture, giving it a warm and cozy feel. Aim to complete the menu! "PINEAPPLE MINT" has a full lineup of Japanese, Western and Chinese dishes

Located in the office-filled area south of Nagoya Station, PINEAPPLE MINT has been attracting more and more repeat customers since it opened in 2011. The reason for its popularity is the extremely reasonable prices offered by the owner, who is full of service spirit, and the extensive menu that makes it fun to choose from.

A popular choice for those who want a hearty meal is the "Miso Katsu Sasami Donburi Morning" (300 yen plus the price of a drink), an adaptation of Nagoya's specialty misokatsu. Miso katsu is usually made with pork, but using chicken gives it a lighter texture and makes it more refreshing to eat. Branded pork cutlet in a refreshing dashi soup. A specialty dish at Gohan Cafe Beni

Located in the suburbs of Nagoya, Gohan Cafe Beni has been loved by the local community for nearly 50 years. If you are driving, it takes just under 30 minutes from Nagoya Station on the expressway (Nagoya Central Circular Route), and you can also take a bus via the Higashiyama Line or Tsurumai Line of the subway.
It originally started as a restaurant and was renovated in 2014. It is a casual dining cafe that offers a full menu of Japanese, Western and sweet breakfasts.

The person in charge of cooking in the kitchen is the second-generation owner, who took over the restaurant from his mother.

The specialty here is the unusual "Morning Tea and Rice Set" (700 yen with drink). It is a freshly fried crispy pork cutlet soaked in a soy sauce soup based on bonito stock and topped with boiled cabbage and shredded seaweed. They are very particular about the ingredients they use, including Kagoshima's brand pork "Charmiton", organic rice, and a soy sauce soup blended with herb water.
You might think, "Isn't tonkatsu too heavy for breakfast...?" but the soup with dashi and plenty of cabbage have a gentle flavor, making it surprisingly light to eat. The way experts eat ochakatsu is to put it on rice, making it like ochazuke.
It's so popular that on weekends, customers come from all over Kanto and Kansai just to try the ochakatsu, and it's a dish worth traveling from afar to try.
Choose from a selection of set drinks and enjoy our hand-brewed cloth-drip coffee, a tradition we have continued to uphold since our founding.
