雄物川の２つの支流、成瀬川と皆瀬川の合流地点に位置する増田町は、古くから産業･交通･物流の要として栄えました。町の中心にある中七日町通りには明治から昭和初期にかけて商人が築いた町並みや、外からは見ることができない内蔵が今も残されています。
内蔵は、商売人にとって成功の証であり、一方で、それを作る職人たちにとっては、最先端の技の見せ所でもありました。増田のまちなみは、文化的な価値が非常に高いとの評価を受け、平成25年12月には、国の重要伝統的建造物群保存地区に選定されています。「佐藤又六家」や「山吉肥料店」など、現在も使用されており、住んでいる方から直接解説が聞ける貴重な体験もできます。
