How to spend time on an airplane to apply what you learned on your trip to the future

JAL: We've talked about what happens before and after the trip, but are there any tips for spending time "during the trip"?

Nishimura: On the flight to the airport, I usually catch up on any accumulated work, or if I'm feeling relaxed, I'll listen to music on my headphones, or read a book I've been reading on my Kindle (e-reader). The most distinctive feature of my trips might be how I spend the flight back...

The pouch she brought onto the plane. From the left, it contains an accessory case, fabric freshener and other mist, a Kindle, wireless headphones, and a large-capacity mobile battery. There are also stickers to mark the digital items to prevent them from getting lost.

JAL: How are you spending your time?

Nishimura: First, when I'm at the airport, I buy fashion magazines, technology magazines, and newspapers and compile notes about what happened while I was there. In addition to magazines and newspapers, I also buy business books that interest me and write sentences and illustrations about the inspiration I got from those books and my experiences while traveling in the margins of the books. I treasure the time I spend organizing my thoughts on the way home.

JAL: It's important not to just go and come back and then be done with it, but to keep accumulating it.

Nishimura: I also buy books by people who interest me at local conferences and write about my experiences in them. This is to ensure that my trip doesn't end as just a journey. I organize and accumulate the information I get. I think that these kinds of post-trip actions are what make a trip better.

JAL: I see. But even so, isn't it difficult to plan your itinerary if you have to visit so many different places?

Nishimura: I created a folder on my smartphone called "TRAVEL" and installed several apps for travel-related services such as flight reservations, hotel bookings, and ride sharing (a service that matches carpooling). In this day and age, you can even book a hotel through an app once you've arrived at your destination, so I think I'll be fine as long as I book a place to stay on the first night (laughs). As for flights, JAL's official app, "JAL," is becoming more and more sophisticated, has a modern design, and is very easy to use. If you have it installed, you'll never accidentally miss the expiration date of your miles.

I have many travel-related apps on my smartphone organized in a folder called "TRAVEL."

Finding the "charm of travel" that matches your life stage will allow you to enjoy your trip with a fresh feeling

JAL: This is a typical idea of you, the energetic and active Mr. Nishimura. You also proactively share your experiences on social media during your travels.

Nishimura: Because I want to share fun events as much as possible. I also use an app called "Swarm" that links to SNS and allows you to share the places you've been to, and an acquaintance of mine who went to New York recently said, "The restaurant that Nishimura checked in on Swarm while he was in New York looked delicious, so I used that as a reference and went around" (laughs). We live in an age where you can share the fun of traveling with others by sharing positive information.

JAL: When traveling domestically, you can reach your destination in just a few hours by plane. Does the process of traveling or the way you spend your time change when traveling domestically?

Nishimura: I went to Hokkaido the other day, and when I have a short trip, I try to enjoy the time before I get on the plane. The food at JAL's lounge is delicious, and they have a wide selection of drinks, including draft beer, so I go to the airport a little early and spend some time relaxing in the lounge. I feel that the hospitality is completely different compared to overseas airlines.

JAL: No matter what kind of trip you're traveling, domestic or international, there are many different ways to enjoy it.

Nishimura: My appeal to travel changed when I left school and joined the workforce, and it changes with each stage of life. This may be because as I get older and my environment changes, my values change and so do my travel goals. I really feel that travel is more interesting the more I continue.
