Travel around Kushiro, Hokkaido without a car! A two-day, one-night trip aboard a retro train and enjoy nature

Hokkaido is a place of vast skies and majestic land. Because of its vastness, you might think that it would be difficult to get to scenic spots without a car, but in fact, there are courses that you can enjoy even without a car!
The Kushiro area in eastern Hokkaido is especially recommended as a summer travel destination. Even in summer, the average temperature is cool at around 20 degrees, making it the perfect summer getaway! In addition, from April to October, the retro tourist train "Kushiro Shitsugen Norokko" operates, so even if you don't have a car, you can enjoy a train trip through the great outdoors, such as "Kushiro Shitsugen National Park" and "Akan Mashu National Park."

<the 2nd day>

Approximately 20 minutes to Lake Kussharo by guided tour shuttle bus

Experience the latest adventure travel!

This year, Hokkaido will host the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS), and experiential tourism is gaining attention. We can't afford not to try out this much-talked-about adventure travel! So, we decided to go canoeing at the source of the Kushiro River, which starts from Lake Kussharo, a natural activity that represents Kushiro!

If you want to canoe, we recommend early morning. A guide will accompany you, so even beginners can feel at ease. There are no man-made objects, and the sounds of nature, such as the murmuring of the river and the chirping of wild birds, will cleanse your mind. Why not spend a special moment simply facing nature?

Enjoy Teshikaga's new specialty while gazing at the forest

Once you've finished your canoeing experience and are back in the hot spring town, we recommend stopping by Chip Hop Cafe. Located on the second floor of the Kawayu Visitor Center in Akan Mashu National Park, you can enjoy an original cafe menu while gazing at the forest.

The highlight is Teshikaga's new specialty, "Kussharo Lake Masu Yaki." It is served in a baking mold designed by picture book author Yasunari Murakami, and you can enjoy two types of charcoal, Himemasu (filled with bean paste) and Amemasu (filled with cream), which are fish that live in Lake Kussharo. Made with wheat from Shari, it has a crispy outside and fluffy inside. The "spicy curry" made with eight kinds of whole spices is also delicious!

Specialty bread you'll want to try while traveling. Cute goods to take home as souvenirs

Opposite Mori no Hall in front of Kawayu Onsen Station, which we visited on the first day, is PANAPANA, a shop that offers a selection of handmade bread and cute miscellaneous goods. The wide variety of breads are available in two types: yeast and natural yeast. The miscellaneous goods purchased by the shop owner are all items that will make your daily life comfortable and enjoyable, so why not look for your own favorite?

A train journey back to Kushiro. Reflecting on the grandeur of the marshland seen from the train window

Departing from Kawayu Onsen Station at around 12:00, board the rapid train and enjoy a local train journey to Kushiro Station. The rapid train travels through the marshlands in a single carriage. There are times when locals are on board, but this is also part of the charm of local trains, where you can feel the local lifestyle. On the way to Toro Station, sit on the left side of the train. From Toro Station to Kushiro Station, we recommend sitting on the right side to enjoy the view.

Don't forget to pick up some souvenirs from Kushiro. Shopping time at Kushiro Station

We arrived at Kushiro Station around 13:30. Finally, don't forget to buy some Kushiro souvenirs. If you like alcohol, try the local Kushiro sake "Fukuji" and the popular "Hime Shishamo" (680 yen), which sells out every year depending on the amount caught. We also recommend the "Oyaki" from the retro oyaki shop "Natsukashikan."

At around 13:50, you will board the shuttle bus to Tancho Kushiro Airport from Kushiro Station Terminal, so be careful not to miss it!
