石の文化
2019年度の文化庁の「日本遺産」に、香川、岡山両県の「石の島」として、小豆島や本島などが認定されました。
塩飽諸島は、海でつながる備讃諸島のなかでも、特に海運と縁のある地域です。
中世には塩飽水軍、江戸時代には塩飽廻船の根拠地として知られ、幕末には咸臨丸の乗組員を多数輩出しました。本島には、塩飽の政庁「塩飽勤番所」や塩飽廻船の拠点として栄えた港町「笠島」の歴史的な町並みが残っています。
また、塩飽を統治した「年寄」の墓をはじめとする大形の石造物もあります。
広島には、花崗岩の自然景観「王頭山」や石づくりの灯台、石蔵などがあります。
