12:20 Special Place of Scenic Beauty Ritsurin Garden
Ritsurin Garden was first landscaped around the southern lake by Lord Ikoma Takatoshi, feudal lord of Sanuki Province in the early Edo period. It was then taken over by Matsudaira Yorishige, the first lord of Takamatsu Domain, and was renovated by successive lords over a period of over 100 years until it was completed nearly 300 years ago. With six ponds and 13 artificial hills against the backdrop of the lush greenery of Mt. Shiun, Ritsurin Garden is a stroll-style garden from the early Edo period, with excellent land divisions, stonework, and an abundance of elegant wood and stone. Blessed with the changing scenery of the seasons, the flowers that bloom here, along with 1,000 beautifully maintained pine trees, create a beauty that is said to change with every step. (Takes about 1 hour)

14:45 Old Konpira Grand Theatre (Kanamaruza)
Built in 1835, this is the oldest surviving playhouse in Japan. Kabuki performances and other events were held in temporary playhouses three times a year during the "ichi-tachi" (market openings), but from the middle of the Edo period, as faith in Konpira grew nationwide and temple towns were established, a permanent playhouse became necessary. Many common people also requested the establishment of playhouses, and one was built as a permanent playhouse that also served as a place to open bids for lottery tickets (similar to today's lotteries).
The name "Kanamaruza" was given in 1900. It was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1970, and was relocated and restored to its current location over a period of four years, beginning in 1972. The "Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Grand Theater" has been held here since 1985, and has become a seasonal event heralding the arrival of spring along the Shikoku roads. Restoration and earthquake-proofing work (Heisei's major renovation) was carried out in 2003, and traces discovered during the investigation were examined, and the "grape trellis" and "kakesuji" were restored to recreate an appearance that is more representative of the atmosphere of the Edo period. (Tour takes approximately 1 hour)
