Image: [Musashino City] Inokashira Park - Take a boat ride to enjoy a different view of the cherry blossoms

Inokashira Park, characterized by its large pond, is one of the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots in Japan."

There are 400 cherry trees in the park, about 200 of which are planted around a pond. Many of the trees have branches that extend over the pond, so you can enjoy cherry blossom viewing while going through a tunnel of cherry blossoms by boat. Inokashira Park is the only place where you can get a close-up look at the cherry blossoms reflected in the pond and the cherry blossom petals scattered on the water.

The Tama River, which flows through the Tama area of Tokyo, has many famous spots along the river, from upstream to downstream.

The most famous stretch is along the breakwater from Nagata Bridge to Mutsumi Bridge in Fussa City. There are 500 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees planted along a stretch of about 2.5 km, pleasing the eyes of all who visit. You can enjoy the view from various angles, whether you go up close to observe the cherry blossoms or gaze upon the endless rows of cherry trees from the bridge.

Another great thing about this area is that you can cycle or drive along the side streets to enjoy cherry blossom viewing that is unique to the wide Tama River area.

Koganei Park is located in Koganei City, about 30 minutes by train from Shinjuku. It is a park especially for families, with a variety of activities to enjoy, including an area with large playground equipment, a cycling course, and a barbecue area.

There are about 1,400 cherry trees of about 50 varieties, including Yamazakura, Satozakura, and Oshimazakura, planted in the park. The best time to see them is long, from late March to late April, and many of the cherry trees bloom late, so it's a great place for people who missed the cherry blossom viewing season.

The Koganei Sakura Festival is scheduled to be held on March 29th (Sat) and 30th (Sun), 2025. In addition to events such as local performing arts and music performances, there will also be food and drink stalls. Tea ceremonies and flower seats will also be available in the adjacent Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum, so it is also recommended for those who want to enjoy cherry blossom viewing at a leisurely pace.
