[Yamagata] SHONAI HOTEL SUIDEN TERRASSE

SHONAI HOTEL SUIDEN TERRASSE, which blends in with the rural landscape of the Shonai Plain, was inspired by the rice paddies of the area and is an eye-catching hotel built to appear as if it is floating in the middle of them. Ban Shigeru's architecture gently blends in with the rice paddy scenery, which changes with the seasons, without disrupting the surrounding landscape.

The concept of this hotel is "a floating hotel on a rice field where you can spend time working and reading in rain or shine." It is a facility where you can embrace nature as it is, regardless of the season or weather, and feel that you are an element of nature.

Paper tubes, a representative icon of Ban, are used throughout the building, allowing visitors to directly experience Shigeru Ban's architecture. Paper tube benches have also been installed in the sauna at Tsukishiro-no-Yu, allowing visitors to experience the world of Ban's work.
*The sauna does not use paper tubes due to humidity levels, but has wooden benches that imitate paper tubes.

The adjacent Kids Dome Sorai was also designed by him and features a large roof made from locally grown cedar and larch. Please do try this out too.

[Tochigi] Art Biotop Suite Villa

Art Biotop Nasu is known for its "Water Garden" designed by Junya Ishigami. In addition to the existing residences, a wooden one-story "Suite Villa" designed by Shigeru Ban was opened in 2020.
The 14 buildings and 15 rooms (one of which is a connecting room) of completely independent villas are arranged to take advantage of the gentle slope of the original woodland, and are split-level, with the bedrooms on the upper floor and the living room five steps down (excluding the connecting rooms).
The two streams that run along the property have been preserved, allowing you to spend a relaxing time listening to the soothing sounds of the streams.

Natural materials such as stones excavated during construction, diatomaceous earth, and laminated lumber made from larch and Douglas fir have been used inside and outside the building, creating a space where one can feel the diversity of nature even while indoors.

There are no pillars inside the room, and when the 3m deep terrace doors are opened, a second living room is created that harmonizes with the natural surroundings outside, making your stay feel as if you are one with the nature at the foot of the Nasu Mountains.
