Enjoy in-flight meals and fruit picking at JAL's farm restaurant in Narita

There are ways to experience the true joy of the skies without boarding a plane. For example, there is the farm restaurant "Dining Port Goryokaku" near Narita Airport. You can enjoy a menu that recreates the in-flight meals served on international flights, as well as the curry served in JAL's international lounge, which is known to be closely guarded. In addition, you can pick fruit on a directly managed farm and enjoy a barbecue. Let us introduce you to the farm restaurant operated by JAL.

It's about a 10-minute drive from Narita Airport. If you don't know about it, you might just pass it by. Dining Port Goryokaku sits quietly blending into the tranquil countryside. This restaurant is operated by JAL after renovating a private home. The day we visited to take photos was a weekday, but every day the restaurant is almost full immediately after opening.

It has been about 50 years since Narita Airport opened. We opened this restaurant with the desire to give back to the land of Narita that has been kind to JAL for so many years. We purchased a private home and renovated it. We made extensive use of glass and curved lines, and placed importance on creating a comfortable atmosphere under the supervision of a designer who has worked on airport lounges.

"We've added a playful touch that is unique to JAL. We use plates and cups that are used on board our aircraft. We also brought containers that were no longer in use at the airport using a lift and truck. In fact, the shop has many handmade elements."

Yoshihiro Okuma, General Manager of JAL Agriport, which operates the facility, looks back on it as follows: "It is a JAL group company that works in cooperation with the local community and provides services with an eye on inbound tourism.

Menu items using local ingredients, including the popular "lounge curry"

"The president, Akio Kamagata, is originally from here. He wanted to serve food that makes the most of Chiba's characteristics. So, we mainly use ingredients from Narita, but we don't just use local ingredients; we use ingredients from all over Chiba."

The menu item that lets you enjoy locally produced food to the fullest is the "Goryo Tsuru Kobachizen" (2,500 yen including tax). This is a signature dish made by a chef who has trained in Italian cuisine.

The Imperial Crane Small Bowl Set comes with a selection of small dishes. On this day, there were six dishes, including eel omelette, Suigyo chicken bang bang chicken, traditional Kujukuri namero, and a bite-sized piece of rapeseed pork cutlet with dora bean sauce, all of which have a Western essence. The plentiful fresh vegetables on the side are not only a colorful addition, but also dance in your mouth with their freshness.

Another popular menu item is the "JAL Special Original Beef Curry" served in JAL's international lounges. This European-style curry, with its rich and deep blend of ingredients and spices, is a traditional flavor loved by many customers. The accompanying roasted onions are also a great supporting role. Cooked slowly and carefully, they bring out the sweetness and have a crumbly soft finish. Even children who don't like onions will enjoy this dish.

"This curry was made possible by Kamagata's strong desire. Kamagata was originally a flight attendant and later took charge of all in-flight meals. She is also a certified sommelier and is one of the most knowledgeable about food at JAL. This curry is rarely served outside of the lounge, so we were finally able to offer it this time."

Enjoy the in-flight experience with in-flight meals and original shochu

There is also a menu that is perfect for getting into the mood of flying. You can also enjoy the in-flight meals served in economy class on international flights at Goryozuru. The menu changes with the seasons, but the current lineup (August 2020) includes "Delicious stewed beef and vegetables with rice," "Spicy stewed beef belly and tomatoes," and "Crab and pork belly doria." We serve the same dishes that are served on board.

"On a plane, you always have two to choose from, but here you have three to choose from."

We also focus on things other than the restaurant. We also have a sweet potato field on our directly managed farm, where we make our original sweet potato shochu "Tsurusora" from the sweet potatoes we harvest. You can drink it in our restaurant, and it is also available for purchase on our website. It has a refreshing and fruity taste. It goes down smoothly, and the fragrant aroma of sweet potatoes wafts through your nose.

"We have a shochu brewery in Fukuoka Prefecture distill our spirits, and it's popular with customers in Kyushu, a famous shochu-producing region. It has also been endorsed by JAL's alcohol advisor, and is served on board business class passengers. In addition, a version with a different alcohol content, "Tsuruzora PREMIUM" (35% alcohol), is also available for purchase on international flights."

If you have room in your stomach, try the desserts. We offer a menu using fresh fruits grown on the adjacent farm. We offer dishes using strawberries from winter to spring, and blueberries in summer.

In the restaurant's large lawn area, we provide equipment, meat, vegetables, etc. so that you can enjoy a day camping experience. Please come and enjoy a barbecue without having to bring anything.

"We also provide tarps, tables, BBQ grills and charcoal. The chef will also provide ingredients selected for you. It's easier and cheaper than preparing everything yourself, and there's no time limit, so you can relax until the evening."

If you go a little further, you will find the directly managed farm. On the vast 4.5 hectare site, there are 21 vinyl greenhouses where strawberries and grapes are grown. They also grow blueberries, potatoes, and seasonal vegetables, some of which are served in the restaurant. Right now, it is time to harvest summer vegetables such as okra, eggplant, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes.

You can also enjoy picking high-quality seasonal fruits for your in-flight meals.

"The strawberries were planted by volunteer staff from the JAL Group. The maintenance staff worked hard to create a floor for the walkways inside the greenhouses that resembles a runway. The strawberries are grown at a high elevation so that visitors can pick them while standing, and there are also seedlings at a lower elevation for wheelchair users."

Strawberry picking is suspended in the summer, but you can pick blueberries grown outdoors. Each tree has its own variety, so there are many different flavors.

"Our farm is ASIA GAP certified, and all our crops are grown in accordance with the standards. You can enjoy the same high-quality fruit that is used in our in-flight meals."

To allow you to enjoy your meal with peace of mind even during the COVID-19 pandemic

We use local ingredients and offer a menu that is usually only available by plane, and have received positive reviews. However, we were forced to close due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic shortly after our opening in March.

"We had just opened and were closed for a month and a half. We wondered if there was anything we could do, so we made bento boxes and sold them to JAL staff at Narita Airport. Even though they were for groups, we didn't cut corners and the bento boxes, which used ingredients from Goryozuru throughout, were well received."

After reopening, all staff will wear masks and we ask customers to disinfect their hands with alcohol and take their temperature before entering the restaurant. In addition, we disinfect tables after meals. Customers can also dine on the outdoor terrace if they wish. In addition, we recommend making a reservation in advance as lunchtime is expected to be busy.

We offer a rich dining experience. Please come to Narita.

Currently, the restaurant is only open for lunch, but they hope to reopen for dinner as well.

"Thanks to you all, people are talking about us, especially on social media, which makes me very happy. We need to make efforts to ensure that this trend continues. In the future, we are also considering offering vegetable picking experiences to our customers. We would like to serve dishes made from the vegetables that our customers have picked."
