[Hokkaido/Tohoku Area] Just like Ghibli! A journey to encounter the tranquility and grandeur of nature
The Hokkaido and Tohoku areas are filled with fantastical nature, making you feel as if you've wandered into a world straight out of a Ghibli film. First, we will take you on a journey to hidden places—destinations that offer both deep tranquility and powerful beauty.
"Lake Shikaribetsu" (Hokkaido): A railway line submerged in the lake leads to a fantasy world
Lake Shikaribetsu, located in the Tokachi region of Hokkaido, is a natural lake that sits quietly within Daisetsuzan National Park. It is located in the mountains at an altitude of about 800m, and access is required by car or bus, but in return it is a place filled with a sense of secludedness and special tranquility.

One of the reasons Lake Shikaribetsu attracts attention is the single railroad track submerged in the lake. This rail is for pulling sightseeing boats onto land before winter, but it is reminiscent of the fantastical scene in the Ghibli movie "Spirited Away" where a train runs on the water. The railroad track that continues as if it is being sucked into the water is a spectacular sight that gives off an otherworldly feeling that everyone would like to see at least once.

The best time to visit is from spring to autumn, when the lake is highly transparent and its tranquil blue color stands out. The beautiful mountains reflected on the lake's surface make for a time that will make you want to quietly take your camera. However, Lake Shikaribetsu in winter also has its own unique charm. In the extreme cold, when the lake is completely frozen over, the phantom village of Kotan, which can only be seen from the end of January to mid-March, offers an ice hotel called the "Ice Lodge," an open-air ice bath, and an ice bar. The extraordinary experience of sleeping on a frozen lake is sure to be a memory that will last a lifetime.
It's not just photogenic, but the tranquility that will cleanse your soul and the untouched nature will surely make this a soothing trip.

A thrilling experience to encounter the "Niagara of the Orient"! "Fukiware Falls" (Gunma Prefecture)

Provided by: Numata City Tourism Association
Fukiwarenotaki Falls in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, is known as the "Niagara Falls of the Orient" for its spectacular natural scenery. It is relatively easy to access, about two and a half hours by car from Tokyo, so it is a great spot for a short weekend trip.
The biggest feature of this waterfall is the dynamic sight of the river water gushing down through the cracks in the rock. The sight of the water flowing down the 7m high, 30m wide waterfall carving into the earth is truly spectacular. The water splashing as it flows down looks as if the rocks have been blown apart, which is said to be the origin of its name.
There is a well-maintained walking path around the waterfall, where you can walk all the way around the waterfall. Walking while feeling the sound of the waterfall up close will make you feel free from your daily routine. One of the attractions of the waterfall is that it shows different faces with each season: the green budding in spring, the cool sound of the water in summer, and the vibrant autumn leaves in autumn.

Enter the world of Real-Life Laputa floating on Tokyo Bay: Sarushima Island (Kanagawa Prefecture)

Sarushima, located in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, is the only natural island floating in Tokyo Bay. It is only a 15-minute walk from Yokosuka Chuo Station on the Keikyu Line or a 10-minute boat ride from Mikasa Pier, but it offers an otherworldly view far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Sarushima was once the site of a fortress built as a defense base for Tokyo Bay from the end of the Edo period through World War II. Even today, the moss-covered brick tunnels, remains of artillery batteries, barracks, and ammunition depots remain as they are, and the light filtering in through the gaps in the trees creates a mystical atmosphere.

The sight of nature enveloping the architecture has been a hot topic on social media, with people saying it looks like the movie Laputa. The "beauty of the ruins," where history and nature coexist, is exciting to walk through as if you were an explorer.
The entire island is surrounded by lush greenery, and one of its charms is how it changes appearance with the seasons, from the refreshing fresh greenery from spring to summer to the colorful leaves in autumn. In addition, outdoor activities such as fishing and barbecues are available on the island, so you can fully enjoy nature even on a day trip.

Senjojiki Cirque, located in Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture, offers a magnificent panoramic view at an altitude of 2,612m, directly below Mount Hoken in the Central Alps. It is characterized by steep rock peaks and a smooth, bowl-shaped curl formed during the Ice Age, and is also known as the "Switzerland of Japan" for its magnificent natural beauty.
The best part is how easily accessible the scenery is. You don't need any serious mountaineering equipment or experience to access the trails! From Komagane Highlands at the base, take a local bus and a ropeway to a world over 2,600m in one go. From the ropeway window, you can enjoy the view of the deep forests and valleys.

No matter what season you visit, you'll be treated to an extraordinary world.

"Shiroyone Senmaida" (Ishikawa Prefecture): A traditional Japanese landscape we want to preserve for the future

Provided by: Wajima City
The beautiful "Shiroyone Senmaida" terraces stretch out along the slope overlooking the Sea of Japan in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. As its name suggests, the sight of 1,004 rice terraces of various sizes stretching along the coastline is a quintessential example of Japan's original landscape.
It shows a different side to each season; in spring the blue sky is reflected in the water-filled rice fields, in summer the lush green rice sways in the breeze, in autumn the rice turns golden, and in winter the snowy scenery gives it a sense of tranquil beauty.

Provided by: Wajima City
This is one of the representative spots of "Noto Satoyama Satoumi," the first place in Japan to be certified as a "Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System." Rice cultivation in narrow rice terraces is difficult to mechanize, and even today, each rice field is carefully managed by hand. Not only is it a glamorous tourist destination, but it is also a place where you can experience the wisdom of the local people that they have preserved for many years and their coexistence with nature.
Shiroyone Senmaida was also severely damaged in the Noto Peninsula earthquake that occurred in 2024. Since then, with the help of local people and volunteers from all over the country, restoration has been progressing little by little. As of May 2025, rice planting has been completed in about 250 terraces, and the area is gradually regaining its former beautiful scenery.
Visiting as a tourist is also a form of support. Why not go on a journey to see for yourself the miraculous landscapes created by nature and man, and connect them to the future?

Due to its mystical scenery, it has also been called "Japan's Machu Picchu," and is said to be a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.

Nachi Falls, one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, can be found in a sacred place where the gods live (Wakayama Prefecture)
Nachi Falls in Nachikatsuura Town, Wakayama Prefecture, is one of Japan's three most famous waterfalls, and is highly popular as a "scenic spot that everyone should visit at least once" due to its beauty and scale. The height of the waterfall is particularly noteworthy. It is an astounding 133 meters from top to bottom, and is known as the tallest straight waterfall in Japan (a waterfall where water falls in a straight line to the pool).
The waterfall is also the object of worship at Hiro Shrine, a branch shrine of Kumano Nachi Taisha, one of the three Kumano mountains, and the waterfall itself is worshipped as a god. When you pass through the shrine's torii gate and see the waterfall up close, it is not just a natural landscape, but a sacred "space of prayer" that exudes a quiet, powerful presence that purifies the hearts of those who visit.
The grounds of Hiro Shrine also contain a gift shop that sells amulets and goshuin stamps, making it popular with people who enjoy visiting shrines and those who are interested in spiritual matters. The area can be foggy in the early morning, and the sight of the waterfall, forest, and mist makes you feel as if you have stepped into a mythical world. The miraculously clear Niyodo River (Kochi Prefecture): Feel the healing power of the Niyodo Blue

The Niyodo River, a scenic natural spot representing Kochi Prefecture, is a "miraculously clear stream" that has attracted attention from all over the country. It has been selected as the "river with the best water quality" many times in surveys by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, and its transparency and clear blue color has earned it the nickname "Niyodo Blue." This mysterious blue color is a natural art piece created by the clear water, so clear you can see all the way to the bottom of the river, and the light that shines into the river. Another attractive feature is the way the color changes depending on the season and time of day, so you can discover new beauty no matter how many times you visit.
The upper reaches of the clear stream are dotted with mystical scenic spots such as Nakatsu Valley, Nikobuchi, and Yasui Valley, where you can enjoy photogenic scenery. River activities such as kayaking and SUP are also popular on the river, and it is recommended for those who want to get some exercise in the great outdoors. The time spent gazing up at the magnificent view surrounded by mountains while surrendering yourself to the river is truly out of the ordinary.

Akiyoshidai (Yamaguchi Prefecture): A spectacular view of the magnificent karst created by the ancient sea

Akiyoshidai, which spreads across Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is a spectacular natural spot known as Japan's largest karst plateau. The vast grassland is dotted with countless white limestone formations, creating an otherworldly landscape. The limestone that makes up the majestic scenery of Akiyoshidai was formed as a coral reef in the southern seas about 350 million years ago, and over the years, a unique topography has formed.

Akiyoshidai changes with the seasons, showing a new side to you every time you visit - the black and white plateau caused by the early spring burning of the mountains, the budding buds and greenery of summer, the golden grasslands of autumn, and the snowy landscapes of winter. There are also observation decks and promenades, so we recommend taking a leisurely hike and experiencing nature.
Additionally, Akiyoshido Cave, one of the largest limestone caves in Japan, stretches beneath Akiyoshidai, and you can experience completely different natural artworks above and below ground. Of the total length of about 11 km, about 1 km is open to the public, and you can enjoy an underground exploration-like experience with giant stone pillars, fantastical stalactites, and underground rivers.

Takachiho Gorge (Miyazaki Prefecture): Immerse yourself in nature on the mythical site where the heavens and the earth were created
Takachiho Town in northern Miyazaki Prefecture is a sacred place that often appears in Japanese mythology. Takachiho Gorge, located there, is a valley that is said to have been formed by the great eruption of Mount Aso about 90,000 to 120,000 years ago. The cliffs, about 80 to 100 meters high, stretch for about 7 km, and the unique scenery is very appealing.
One thing you can't miss is the unique rock surface, called "columnar joints," which are formed when the lava cools and splits vertically. You'll be entranced by the geometric beauty created by the power of nature.

On the Gokase River that flows through the center of the gorge, you can enjoy the beauty of the gorge from the water's surface while riding a rowboat. The 17m-high Manai Falls cascade overhead, and its power and mystical atmosphere make you feel as if you have wandered into another world. The waterfall seen from the boat is a particularly popular photo spot, and shows its beauty in every season.
Takachiho Town is also known as the setting for the myth of Amaterasu Omikami's "Amanoiwato" and the legend of Ninigi no Mikoto's descent from heaven, and many people visit as a place where they can feel spiritual energy. It is a spot where you can experience a truly "mystical" moment, experiencing the overlap of Japanese mythology and history along with the spectacular natural scenery.

Kusasenrigahama Beach (Kumamoto Prefecture): A spectacular plateau where you can experience the natural beauty of Aso in its entirety

Kusasenrigahama, located in Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is a plateau that spreads out at the northern foot of Mt. Eboshi, one of the five peaks of Aso. The vast grassland, about 1 km in diameter, is a scenic spot where you can enjoy the idyllic scenery of grazing cattle, with a pond formed by rainwater collecting in the remains of a former crater and lush grassland.
If the weather is good, you can see horses leisurely walking across the grassland, creating a European rural landscape. (Please do not approach horses while they are grazing.)

Its appearance changes dramatically depending on the season, time of day, and weather, and every time you visit you'll see a different side to it, such as the fantastic sight of a morning mist or a golden grassland illuminated by the setting sun. The grass is particularly vibrant green from spring to autumn, making it the perfect time for a stroll and photography. In winter, you can see a frozen pond floating alone in the snowy landscape.
