This nori tsukudani is made with non-standard perilla leaves that have grown to the size of the palm of your hand and are known to local farmers as "demon perilla leaves." These large perilla leaves have a punchy aroma and texture, and are said to have been named "demon perilla leaves" because they give off an almost demonic strength. In the past, when they were featured on a music program as a favorite of a popular artist, they temporarily ran out of stock. These dumplings are served with tea at the Dogo Onsen Main Building, and are made of mochi wrapped in three different colored bean pastes: matcha bean paste, white bean paste, and red bean paste, and skewered. As the product name "Botchan Dango" suggests, they were actually made after Natsume Soseki's novel "Botchan." Utsubo-ya's Botchan Dango is made without eggs, and is characterized by its mild sweetness and smooth texture. It is also recommended to eat it chilled.
