吉田松陰が主催した私塾。吉田松陰は、塾生の身分や階級を問わず教育を行いました。門人への指導期間はわずか2年あまりでしたが、幕末の動乱期に活躍した多数の志士たち、明治維新が新しい国づくりにに重要な役割を担った数多くの逸材がここから輩出されました。
また、松陰神社は、吉田松陰を祭神とする神社で、敷地内には、世界遺産登録された松下村塾や吉田松陰幽囚ノ旧宅のほか、平成21年に松陰神社宝物殿 至誠館が開館。松陰先生の遺墨や遺品類などが展示されており、企画展なども開催されています。
