[Stunning view ①] Be amazed by the grandeur of the "Seven Waterfalls" and cool off in the spray (Osaka Town)

Located along the Odate-Towada Lake Prefectural Road (commonly known as the Jukai Line), Roadside Station Kosaka Nanataki is a popular rest stop on the road between Odate City and Lake Towada National Park. The nearby Nanataki waterfalls are a famous waterfall that is counted among the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan."

You can see it from the parking lot, but if you cross the road, you'll see the waterfall right in front of you. As its name suggests, the sight of water roaring down from a height of about 60 meters over seven tiers is overwhelming. Feeling the water spray up close, you can enjoy the refreshing feeling that is unique to summer.

According to the ancient "Legend of the Seven Waterfalls," the Seven Waterfalls are the incarnations of a giant snake, and at the foot of the falls was built Nanataki Shrine, dedicated to the dragon god of prosperity in business. With the waterfall in the background, the surrounding area is filled with a charming green space, with a watermill and a bridge leading to the waterfall basin.

You can see people taking walks or sitting on benches to gaze at the waterfall, relaxing and refreshing your mind while feeling the nature with your whole body. We also recommend relaxing with a mountain grape soft serve ice cream, a specialty of the Kosaka Nanataki Roadside Station.

[Stopover Spot] Observe the brewing process at "Kosaka Nanataki Winery" (Kosaka Town)

After visiting the Seven Waterfalls, we headed to the winery, Kosaka Nanataki Winery, located within a five-minute drive. Grape cultivation began in Kosaka Town because the Tokito area, which is 270-300 meters above sea level, had volcanic ash soil that was deposited by a major eruption of Lake Towada in ancient times, and had good drainage, making it the perfect environment. A hybrid variety of wild grapes that can be grown in cooler climates was introduced there.

In addition to rich red wines that make the most of the high acidity and rich coloring of wild grape varieties, they also brew white wines using Niagara grapes from Akita, as well as seasonal wines.

If you make a reservation in advance, you can visit the facility to see the wine-making process for free. Listening to explanations from the staff and taking a peek into the wine-making room where fermentation and storage take place will surely increase your anticipation for the wine.

The products can be purchased at the roadside station Kosaka Nanataki, located across from Nanataki. Find your favorite bottle while thinking about the background of how wine is made.

[Spot to stop by] Kosaka Railway Rail Park (Kosaka Town) - a place where you can have fun and relive your childhood to your heart's content

About 10 minutes by car south from Nanataki. If you've come all the way to Kosaka Town, why not try a rare tourist experience at the Kosaka Railway Rail Park, which reuses the carriages, facilities, and tracks of the former Kosaka Railway, which was closed down to the regret of many railway enthusiasts? As a railway theme park where you can watch, learn, and experience, it is a spot where not only children but also adults can return to their childhood and enjoy the history of railways and the atmosphere of the time.

You can see rare vehicles, including diesel locomotives that even enthusiasts will drool over, and snowplows (vehicles used to push snow) that are unique to snowy regions. It's also a great way to get on board a vehicle and pretend to be the conductor and take a commemorative photo.

If you visit the facility, you'll want to pick up some railway-related souvenirs, such as straps with station signs, clear files, and paper crafts.

Kosaka Railway Rail Park

[Stunning View ②] A scenic journey through the fresh greenery on the "Akita Inland Line" (Kitaakita City)

The Akita Nairiku Jukan Railway (line name: Akita Nairiku Line) is a local line that runs through the forest, connecting Kakunodate (Semboku City) and Takanosu (Kitaakita City). If you want to fully experience the charm of the Kitaakita area, we recommend a nostalgic, scenic trip on the Akita Nairiku Line.

As the train departs, a female attendant will point out the viewpoints, such as the nature and unique rice field art that can be seen from the train window. The scenery passing by the train window goes from lush, idyllic countryside to a tunnel that runs through the deep mountains, and then passes through the 5,697m long "Junidan Tunnel," the longest in Akita Prefecture.

As the train approaches the Omata River Bridge, a scenic spot spanning the fresh green valley, it slows down and moves along at a leisurely pace. Open the window and take a deep breath as you look down at the Ani River. The sparkling green of the trees in the valley and the vivid red of the bridge create a stunning contrast. The peaceful moment rocked by the local train while taking in the spectacular view is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

[Spot to stop by] "Akita Inu no Sato" (Odate City) - Learn to love Akita dogs even more

When you think of Akita Prefecture, many people think of the Akita dog. About 30 minutes by car from Takanosu Station, the terminus of the Akita Nairiku Jukan Railway, there is a tourist facility called "Akita Inu no Sato" with an Akita dog theme that is irresistible for Akita dog lovers. The highlights are the museum where you can learn about the origins and personalities of Akita dogs in a fun way, and the exhibition room where you can see Akita dogs up close.

A different Akita dog appears in the exhibition room each day. They don't get attached easily, but once you gain their trust, you can have a close relationship... you'll want to know more about these adorable Akita dogs. There are also many other things to see, such as the "Akita Dog Tree," which is made up of over 160 stuffed animals, so have fun walking around with your family and friends while taking photos. [Spot to stop by] Take a break on the open terrace of "S.witch cafe" (Odate City)

Located in the renovated two-story building "Wappa Building" near JR Odate Station, "S.witch cafe" is run by two local sisters. If you get tired from traveling in the heat, why not take a break on the open-air terrace and feel the refreshing breeze?

Along with the delicious coffee brewed by the barista, you'll want to try their handmade sweets. If you choose to eat in, they'll also decorate your plate for you, which is a nice touch.

The most popular item is the "Magewappa Tiramisu" served in a dish by Shibata Yoshinobu Shoten. You can touch, see, and feel the charm of Odate Magewappa while savoring the bittersweet taste of the original coffee. This is a cafe where you can experience the culture of Odate while taking a break.

The Oga Peninsula, with its beautiful, undulating coastline, is a popular driving course. About an hour by bus from JR Oga Station, the northernmost cape of the Oga Peninsula is Nyudozaki, a tourist spot that Akita is proud of.

From the endless grassy plain, you can see the magnificent Sea of Japan. The contrast between the vibrant green land under the scorching sun, the cloudless summer sky, and the magnificent Sea of Japan is sure to leave you feeling refreshed. The clear water of the summer is also the best season for the "Undersea See-Through Boat," which allows you to tour the ocean floor.

The lighthouse, characterized by its black and white stripes, is registered as one of the "50 Best Lighthouses in Japan" and has also been certified as a "Lovely Lighthouse" suitable as a date spot. If you climb the lighthouse, you can enjoy a spectacular view, and in the adjacent lighthouse information exhibition room, you can learn about and learn about the history of lighthouses.

Nyudozaki is also a popular spot for watching the sun set over the Sea of Japan. At dusk, the area becomes bustling with families and couples. Oga Aquarium GAO, the only aquarium in Akita Prefecture, is about a 20-minute drive from Nyudozaki. Many marine creatures from the Oga Peninsula and Akita are on display, including popular creatures such as sea lions and penguins, and you can feel as if you are swimming in the Sea of Japan yourself.

One of the highlights of Oga Aquarium GAO is the polar bears. It is rare to see polar bears at an aquarium, and GAO is home to a male polar bear, Gota, and a female, Yuki. In December 2020, a baby polar bear, which is considered difficult to breed, was born for the first time in eight years, causing quite a stir. It will be some time before the baby bear is open to the public, but once it is, be sure to visit GAO, which will be even more lively.

[Stunning view 4] Search for "Godzilla Rock" while feeling the summer sea breeze (Oga City)

About 40 minutes by car from Nyudozaki, driving along the coastline on Prefectural Route 59 while feeling the sea breeze, you will come to Godzilla Rock on a rocky shore called Shiosezaki in the Monzen district at the southwestern tip of the Oga Peninsula. This rocky shore, known as a mecca for rock fishing, is said to have been formed when volcanic rocks formed by the eruption of Mt. Kanpu were eroded by wind and waves over the years, transforming them into strangely shaped rocks.

"Godzilla Rock" was named after the fact that its backlit silhouette resembles the profile of the monster Godzilla, which caused quite a stir.

It has now become one of the most representative spots on the Oga Peninsula, and at sunset, photographers and tourists flock to the spot to see this spectacular view.

This "Godzilla Rock" is surprisingly difficult to find. The rocks are very rough, so be sure to watch your step when exploring to avoid falling. Be sure to visit to capture the moving moment when Godzilla breathes fire into the Sea of Japan.

"TOMOSU CAFE" opened in June 2020 near JR Oga Station, about a 20-minute drive from Godzilla Rock. In keeping with the desire expressed in the cafe's name, "We want to create a place that brings a little excitement to everyday life and lights up the town," the interior of the cafe, which was renovated from a vacant building, has a calm and relaxed atmosphere, and you'll feel comfortable no matter where you sit.

The recommended food items are the "Chicken Nanban Plate," which is made with homemade tartar sauce made with chopped smoked daikon radish, a local Akita specialty, and the "Sauce Katsudon," which revives the taste of a restaurant that was once beloved in the Funakawa area. It's perfect for those who want to enjoy local flavors.

Most of the menu items are available for takeout, so in the summer, why not take a leisurely stroll through the streets of Oga with a cold drink such as "Lime Squash" or "Iced Americano" in hand?

TOMOSU CAFE

[Stunning view ⑤] Experience a summer getaway at the Ghibli-like "Shishigahana Marsh" (Nikaho City)

About 30 minutes by car from JR Kisakata Station. On the northern side of the foothills of Mt. Chokai, there is Nakajimadai Recreation Forest, surrounded by primeval beech forests. Here, you will find the Shishigahana Marsh, a natural monument created by a group of giant, deformed trees and pure underground water.

The largest of these, the Agariko Daio, is 300 years old and has a trunk circumference of 7.62m, making it the "King of the Forest" that dominates the rest. It is said that the reason for this unique shape is that it sprouted from the trunk of a branch that was cut down for charcoal production, which continued from the end of the Edo period until the Showa period, and continued to grow.

There is a walking trail, so why not try hiking in the summer (we recommend bringing sturdy, comfortable shoes). Along the way, try sticking your hands into the stream that flows from Mt. Chokai and enjoy the coolness.

Feel the vitality of the beech trees as they grow, spreading their branches wide towards the sky, and be surrounded by the lush greenery of the trees, bathed in soft sunlight filtering through the trees. You'll feel as if you've wandered into the world of Studio Ghibli, and be immersed in the mysterious sensation.

Shishigahana Marsh

[Spot to visit] Be amazed by the technology of the future! "TDK History Museum" (Nikaho City)

About 30 minutes by car from Shishigahana Marshland. In Nikaho City, the manufacturing base of TDK, one of the world's leading electronic component manufacturers, you can find the TDK History and Future Museum, where you can experience something completely different from being in nature. It is a fusion space where you can learn about the history of TDK products and technologies and the future of cutting-edge technology through videos and hands-on attractions in a fun way.

The highlight is the Future Zone, where you can experience the future of 2035. There is a lot to see, including a special exhibition experience corner that is updated regularly, and a re-enactment corner where you can control life in the near future with AI. New experience exhibits are also planned for May. In particular, the Interactive Magnetic Field Theater by teamLab is a hot topic, as it artistically expresses themes such as space, earth, and electrons, and allows you to enjoy various interactions that change when you touch them. If you're traveling, you'll want to enjoy the local ingredients, right? Then head to the French restaurant "Remède Nikaho," located about 30 minutes by car from Shishigahana Marsh and 3 minutes by car from TDK Miraikan Museum. Chef Kenichi Watanabe, who was also selected for Japan's "The Best of Chef50," shows off his skills here, hoping to convey the splendor of Akita, including its rich nature and agricultural products, through his cuisine.

The shop is housed in a former guesthouse of a local company, giving it a modern Japanese and stylish feel. At night, the garden is lit up, creating an even more magical atmosphere.

Reservations are required for lunch (from 5,500 yen, tax included, 5% service charge) and dinner (from 11,000 yen, tax included, 5% service charge). The "full course using seasonal ingredients" available for dinner is particularly satisfying, with an amuse bouche, 2-4 hors d'oeuvres, fish dish, meat dish, dessert, after-meal drink, and sweets. The unique French cuisine, which pursues the possibilities of Akita ingredients and incorporates fermented food culture, is a one-of-a-kind taste that can only be found here.

Remedy nikaho

[Stunning View ⑥] Spectacular activities at the cobalt blue Lake Tazawa (Semboku City)

Located about a 10-minute drive from JR Tazawako Station, Lake Tazawa is the deepest lake in Japan and has a crystal clear cobalt blue color. Its beauty is at its finest in the summer.

The golden statue of Tatsuko, which was erected based on the legend that her daughter, Tatsuko, who wished to "make her beauty eternal," transformed into a dragon and threw herself into Lake Tazawa, is a symbol of this nationally renowned scenic spot. The beautiful contrast between the lapis lazuli lake surface and the golden statue is breathtaking.

There are many view spots dotted around the area, about 20km away, and right next to the statue of Tatsuko is Kansagu (also known as Ukigi Shrine), known as a power spot for matchmaking. It might be a good idea to pray here to be blessed with a good match during your travels. Gozanoishi Shrine, the shrine dedicated to Princess Tatsuko, is marked by a vermilion-painted torii gate that stands out on the lake. There is a gazebo nearby, which is perfect for a rest.

In the summer, you can enjoy lake activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and SUP, as well as camping at Lake Tazawa. Nyuto Onsenkyo, located in the mountains, is dotted with seven hot spring inns that have retained the atmosphere of a hot spring resort since ancient times, each with its own hot spring source. With an abundance of hot spring water and a wide variety of spring qualities, this hot spring area is rare across the country, and all hot spring lovers will agree that it's a place they want to visit at least once.

Tsuru-no-yu Onsen, the oldest hot spring resort in the Nyuto Onsen area, is a nationally renowned hidden hot spring inn nestled in a deep forest that resembles a natural garden. When you are surrounded by steam and milky white water in the spacious open-air mixed bath, you can feel the charm of nature unique to summer, such as the birds singing and the rustling of the plants, and immerse yourself in an overwhelming sense of freedom.

The other hot springs are also full of individuality, so if you can't decide which one to choose, we recommend using the "Yumeguricho" (hot spring tour book) which allows you to bathe at each of the seven inns once. Nyuto Onsen Village

Within a 30-minute drive from Lake Tazawa, a must-see spot for sightseeing in Akita is Kakunodate in Senboku City, Michinoku's Little Kyoto. Kakunodate Samurai Residence Street, with its beautiful historic samurai residences and rows of trees, is a place where you can spend a relaxing time as the trees change from young leaves to green leaves and then to a deep green in summer. The refreshing and quiet streets make it pleasant to just look at them.

You can see many samurai residences on the streets, and if you take a rickshaw ride around, you'll feel even more excited. Your line of sight will be higher than when you're walking, so you'll be able to see a slightly different view.

Also, pay attention to the old-fashioned round postbox, which creates a beautiful contrast between the deep green and the black wooden fence of the samurai residence. It has no doubt been watching over the tourists who visit the street for many years. You will feel the urge to take a photo and write a letter to someone.

[Stopover spot] Stroll around "Akita Purintei" with some cool, retro-pop sweets in hand (Semboku City)

As you stroll along Kakunodate Samurai Residence Street, you'll come across a pudding specialty shop with a retro pop exterior called "Michinoku Nostalgic Taste Akita Purintei." Since its opening in the spring of 2020, its small bottled puddings and soft serve ice cream have been gaining popularity as they look great on social media.

The puddings are made in the store's workshop using carefully selected ingredients, including domestically produced ingredients and high-quality natural vanilla beans from Madagascar. In addition to the store's signature "Smooth Pudding," don't miss the seasonal products (limited quantities) such as "Chestnut Pudding," "Sakura Pudding," and "Strawberry Pudding (March to May)," which are made with plenty of selected chestnuts.

While you're strolling, a plump, thickly rolled "Pudding Soft" will cool you down and quench your thirst in the summer. The sweet and fragrant caramel sauce on top is the highlight. Why not take a photo with the beautiful street view in the background?

[Stunning view 7] Enjoy a relaxing time at the Rokugo Springs, where you can enjoy foot-cleansing water and more (Misato Town)

Rokugo (currently Misato Town) is a village of abundant pure water that has been called "100 Pure Waters" since ancient times. The "Rokugo Springs (Pure Waters)" were selected as one of the "100 Famous Waters" by the former Environment Agency, and water still flows abundantly today, providing water for daily life, agriculture, and other purposes that are essential to the lives of the local people.

A tour of the spring water is cool, refreshing, and above all soothing, making it one of the best experiences to have in the summer. We recommend touring the spring water with a spring water exploration map available for distribution in the town or for download from the town's official website.

There are about 70 spots in total, including Fujishimizu, named for the stunning beauty of the sight of wisteria flowers blooming all around and reflected on the water's surface, and Nitekoshimizu, the pure water that is the raw material for the local cider Niteko Cider. There are also places that are relaxation spots for locals, spots where you can relax in the water and drink the water. Take your time and explore these pure water spots.

[Spot to stop by] Take a break at the uniquely renovated cafe "gomashio-kitchen" (Misato Town)

In between touring the Rokugo Springs, take a short break at a renovated cafe on a quiet street a short distance away. With just a small sign on the outside, the cafe has the appearance of a true hideaway. The window seats have a fun mechanism where when the sunlight shines in, an illustration drawn on the window appears on the wall.

The food and drinks are varied and unique. Many of the items, such as "Whistle Sandwich" and "Ginza," have names that don't give away what they taste like, making even choosing a menu item exciting. The surreal latte art and coasters, drawn with exquisite detail and reflecting the unique personality of the owner, have become the shop's speciality. The tasteful word choices that will make you chuckle and the original illustrations are part of the fun of visiting, so be sure to check them out.

[Spot to stop by] Cool down your hot body with gelato at "TiG misato" (Misato Town)

To accompany your tour of the Rokugo Springs, try the gelato at "TiG misato" located in the "65 Terrace" complex on Ichiba-dori Shopping Street, which runs through the center of Misato Town. As the store name, which stands for "The Italian Gelato," suggests, the owner, who studied at the "Gelato University" in Italy, makes and serves authentic gelato in his own workshop.

Based on techniques learned from Italian craftsmen, TiG misato's gelato is made using local ingredients and trial and error. No artificial flavorings or colorings are used, and the method makes the most of the natural flavors of the ingredients.

There are 13 types of milk-based desserts, such as "Pistachio" and "Almond Praline," made with milk from the prefecture, and sorbet-based desserts, such as "Strawberry Sorbet." They are sticky but not cloying, with just the right amount of sweetness to instantly cool down the summer heat. If you're not sure what to order, we recommend the "Double," which allows you to enjoy the fun of different combinations.
