Let's connect with "Aloha" now. Introducing the latest messages from Hawaii

Hawaii is a favorite destination for our readers, and for the OnTrip JAL editorial team as well. After a long period in which it was difficult to travel there, Hawaii finally began accepting tourists from Japan on November 6, 2020. The tourism industry has been hit hard and the situation remains tough, but as regulations are being relaxed, we feel that the days when we can travel freely are gradually approaching.

The first message was sent on April 26th (Japan time) from Hawaii Governor David Ige, entitled "To the people of Japan who enjoy close ties with Hawaii."

As some of you may know, Hawaii is currently implementing a 14-day self-quarantine measure for all people upon arrival in Hawaii, and we are asking for your cooperation in postponing travel to Hawaii until the COVID-19 infection situation has stabilized.

In light of this situation, the Governor of Hawaii stated:

"We fully understand that this difficult decision will cause hardship for both Hawaii and Japan. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this difficult time."

Please take a look at David Ige's message to the people of Japan.

A Message from Hawaii Governor David Ige

David Ige has Okinawan roots and is famous for giving a speech in Japanese when he was elected governor of Hawaii in 2014.

The words he used at the time were "for the sake of our children." Apparently, his parents had said this since he was little. It shows his desire to overcome hardships for the sake of the future. You can feel the love and positivity in this message.

A tourism video packed with Hawaii's charm has been released

The second video was released on May 10, 2020. It was produced by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) as the opening video for the Global Tourism Summit.

The film, which is just under two minutes long, captures Hawaii's magnificent scenery and the exciting activities and gourmet food that visitors will love.

Please watch the video that came with the message, "Due to the current difficult situation, we are unable to meet you all in Hawaii, but we hope that you will look back on your precious memories of Hawaii's nature and people through these beautiful images. We look forward to the day we can meet you all again in Hawaii. Aloha."

Video of Hawaii's most prestigious hula dance competition released

The Merrie Monarch Festival is the premier hula dance competition held every year in Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Selected hula dancers compete in categories such as Kahiko (traditional) and Auana (modern) over the course of a week.

Other events include a parade, Hawaiian music performances, Miss Aloha, traditional crafts and art exhibitions, etc. The city of Hilo becomes very lively during the festival.

Unfortunately, this year's Merrie Monarch Festival has been canceled, but a video of the 2019 event has been released. We'd like to introduce it together with a message from Hawaii.

"The Merrie Monarch Festival is a celebration of Hawaiian art and music along with hula, and is an event that attracts many people. In 2020, this event was canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but please take this opportunity to see the 2019 Merrie Monarch Festival."

1. Virtual Hawaii

Using VR footage, you can enjoy movies that make you feel as if you are actually in Hawaii.

We recommend a 360° video where you can virtually board a helicopter and enjoy the great outdoors of Hawaii. Helicopter tours of the Big Island are a popular activity that everyone should try at least once. You can fly to the volcanoes around Kilauea and get a close-up look at the crater, which you can't see from land.

Then, you'll head towards the Kohala Coast and fly dynamically over countless waterfalls cascading from cliffs into the ocean, allowing you to enjoy Hawaii's natural beauty in a realistic way.

2. Relaxing Hawaii

We have gathered soothing content that allows you to feel the great outdoors of Hawaii through sound and video.

We recommend the book "Hawaii Tourism Board: Experience Hawaii through Sounds - Kauai Island, Hawaii's Small Birds". Kauai is the oldest island in Hawaii. It is also known as the "Garden Island" because of the beautiful scenery created by the rich nature and animals.

This video, which allows you to enjoy the realistic chirping of the birds that live in the forests of Kauai, is also perfect as background music for reading or tea time at home.

From traditional music to contemporary and island reggae, "Music Hawaiʻi - Relax Edition - presented by Hawaii Tourism Authority" will let you enjoy live footage of various musicians for about an hour, just like a live music festival.

Playing it as background music while working or doing housework is sure to lift your spirits.

5. Hawaii in the movies

Film commentator LiLiCo picks one recommended movie filmed in Hawaii each week.

The first movie we will introduce is "Moana". Many people have seen it as a Disney movie that incorporates the legendary myths of Hawaii. Watch it again and feel the history and culture of Hawaii.

LiLiCo's high-energy movie commentaries are well worth reading, so be sure to check out the site each week to enjoy them.

6. Reading Hawaii

We offer Hawaii guidebooks, specialist magazines, and magazine features on Hawaii as e-books.

Among them, there is the good news that the popular local Hawaiian magazines "LaniLani" and "Omosan STREET" are now available as e-books (free). When you have time, isn't it a happy way to spend your time to read a book?
