The founder, Kumashiro Watanabe, opened a Western clothing store in 1869. After that, he started various businesses and began a warehouse business in 1887. Shinyotei was founded in May 1949 in the hot spring town of Hakodate and is known for its impressive dry landscape garden within the building.
