Spectacular scenery created by sand and water: Lençóis in Brazil
South America, where unique cultures have developed amidst the vastness of nature, is a treasure trove of spectacular scenery, including the Uyuni Salt Flats, Machu Picchu, and Iguazu Falls. This much-admired continent is also dotted with beautiful landscapes that are not yet widely known in Japan. One of these is Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (hereinafter Lençóis), located in the state of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil. It is a place where the landscape of sand dunes and emerald-green lakes unfolds on an overwhelming scale.

"Lençóis" is a Portuguese word meaning "sheets". As its name suggests, this place, where pure white quartz sand spreads out like a gentle land, covers an area of approximately 1,550 square kilometers. The magnificent "Lençóis" shines especially beautifully in the rainy season. The rainy season in this area usually occurs from January to June, but from the end of the rainy season to around May to September, when rainwater and groundwater accumulate in the depressions of the sand dunes, a breathtaking view appears. Of course, depending on the amount of rain, you may have a chance to see the mysterious view from January to April or September! Why not travel to Brazil in search of the beautiful scenery created by the pure white sand dunes and emerald green lake water?
There's more to enjoying Lençóis than just looking at the spectacular views!
Pure white land stretching as far as the eye can see, and the water sparkling in the strong sunlight. When you visit Lençóis, you will surely be overwhelmed by the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape that unfolds before your eyes. One of the great pleasures of traveling to this place is being able to enjoy the magnificent panorama to your heart's content and take stunningly beautiful photos. Not only during the day when the sun shines brightly, but also at sunrise and sunset, it is dramatic. A mysterious panorama that changes from moment to moment unfolds.
The beauty of the scenery is not the only attraction of Lençóis. The lagoons of Lençóis, filled with rainwater and groundwater whose level has risen due to rainwater, are surprisingly clear and cool and refreshing. Many tourists from all over the world drive around the sand dunes and swim in the countless lagoons. Lençóis is usually accessed by 4WD trucks, but the powerful journey over the rivers and sand dunes is full of adventure. You can experience the excitement of a ride attraction in the midst of a dizzyingly changing landscape. You can't just look at it, you can play until you're exhausted. That is the great appeal of Lençóis.

There are also tours to Lençóis departing from São Luís, so we recommend taking advantage of these.
