Descend into the depths under Mt. Fuji to discover a world of ice in the middle of summer
Venture inside…to discover new worlds!
Narusawa Hyoketsu Ice Cave
The forest of Aokigahara, at the foot of Mt. Fuji, is dotted with the gaping mouths of lava caves formed by a long-ago eruption. And Narusawa Hyoketsu Ice Cave is the king of them all. Awaiting you in its deepest reaches is a world of ice that never thaws, even in summer. With naturally formed ice sculptures, walls of ice blocks, and other wonders to behold, it’s a perfect place to spend a hot summer day.
A pit cave with an average temperature of 3°C
As you make your way down the steep stairs from the entrance, the vast cave looms before you. It’s only further into the depths from here. The 153-meter-long cave forms a double loop like a pair of eyeglasses, allowing you to make a full circle around. With an average temperature of 3°C, the cave is frigid year-round. The jagged lava tunnel is so narrow in some places you’ll have to stoop to pass through, adding to the sense of adventure.
Walls of ice form a natural refrigerator
As you descend further into the cave, you’ll encounter walls made of piled-up blocks of ice. They’re a reminder of the days before refrigerators, when people used to mine the ice in the cave, and today they serve to protect the still-remaining natural ice. Even further along, you’ll find a room full of pillars of ice of all sizes, formed from water dripping from the ceiling. The shimmering light from this dazzling display of ice art is one of the highlights of any journey through the cave.
