Romantic “Heart Rocks” on the “Love Island”
“Heart hunting” trips in the season for love
With easy access by driving across from the Motobu Peninsula of the main island of Okinawa, Kouri Island is also called “Love Island” with a local legend that is similar to the Adam and Eve story. As romantic as its name, a pair of heart-shaped rocks can be found near a small beach. The rocks, which look as if they are floating in the beautiful ocean, have been nicknamed “Heart Rocks”, and made this island popular for couples.
The Kouri Bridge over the emerald green sea
The Kouri Bridge is 1,960 meters long, connecting Yagaji Island and Kouri Island that are off the coast of the main peninsula. The straight bridge across the emerald green sea has become an ideal driving course to see the beautiful sea view, one of the best in Okinawa. You can approach to the observatory at the center of the bridge using the walkway.
Tips for catching the best view of the “Heart Rocks”
The “Heart Rocks” are located on Tinu Beach in the northern part of Kouri Island. On this small beach, you could enjoy the overlook at the exceptional transparency and beauty of the sea. There are two rocks protruding from the ocean. Looking at each of them, you may question “This is the heart-shaped rock”? However, when you move to a point on the beach where they appear to overlap, it clearly looks heart shaped. As here is a beautiful location for the setting sun, visiting in the evening is also recommended.
Tropical sweets at a café on Kouri Island
Kouri Island is café paradise. You can taste unique tropical sweets, such as “mango shaved ice” with plenty of mango pulp, at the cafés near the “Heart Rocks”.
The remains of Nakijin Castle with a dragon-like stone wall
Registered as a World Heritage Site, Nakijin Castle was built in the Sanzan Period before the Okinawa islands were unified, as the base of the Hokuzan kings who ruled the northern region. The sight of the stone wall that extends 1.5 kilometers along the slope of the mountain, looking like a dragon, is incredible.
