Praying at this “Heart Shrine” will improve fortune for love!?
“Heart hunting” trips in the season for love
Biei Shrine in the town of Biei in Hokkaido is known as a shrine that blesses you to find fulfillment in love. The most noteworthy thing is the heart-shaped decoration that can be seen throughout the shrine. Called “inome”, it is a design that brings good luck and has been used at Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples from ancient times. Because it is used quite a lot at Biei Shrine, recently some people have called it the “Heart Shrine”. When visiting there, please try to look for these lovely hearts.
Couple in Japanese myths as the enshrined deities
The fresh air in the precincts of Biei Shrine greets you as you pass through the red Torii gateway. Biei Shrine was established 1897 with a division of the deity from the Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine in Nachikatsuura, Wakayama Prefecture. The hall of worship was built in its present location in 1995. The deities Izanagi-no-Kami and Izanami-no-Kami are also enhrined here. They are husband and wife deities famous from the myths about the creation of Japan.
Small hidden hearts on the shrine’s bell
Since there is a rumor in Japan that your fortune for love will improve as you discover the hidden hearts, please search them carefully. For example, even the bell that you ring before praying has a pattern of very small heart shapes. The sound of the bell purifies the feelings of worshippers, and helps them pray to the divine spirits to act on their behalf. Let’s ring it with a feeling of reverence! At Biei Shrine, it is worth checking out the unique “omikuji” fortune slips and amulets that are characteristic of the town of Biei, such as the omikuji that is shaped like corn.
Delicious bread made from Hokkaido’s wheat
The town of Biei is famous for the production of good quality wheat, and it is dotted with specialty bakeries. Bread that is baked using locally produced wheat flour tastes different.
